Published October 29, 2026 · Last updated October 29, 2026
TL;DR
  • Hongdae has premium and group grills; Gongdeok–Mapo has old pork-galbi houses.
  • Search the Korean name in Naver Map or Kakao Map.
  • Many grills need two portions, so solo diners pay for two.
  • Tipping is not expected. Pay at the counter.
  • Check break times: several spots close roughly 3–5 PM.

The best samgyeopsal (삼겹살, grilled pork belly) in Mapo is not in one place: Hongdae / 홍대 has the premium and group-friendly grills, while the streets between Gongdeok / 공덕 and Mapo Station / 마포역 hold the old pork-galbi and galmaegisal (갈매기살, pork skirt) houses. Eight spots below, each with its Korean name so you can paste it into Naver Map. Hours and prices change, so confirm on the map app before you walk over.

Search the Korean name in Naver Map or Kakao Map — it shows live hours, break time and the closed day.

Ordering

  1. Sit down, then order meat by the portion (인분, inbun). Most places set a minimum of two portions.
  2. Say "삼겹살 둘이요" for two portions of pork belly.
  3. Add rice (공기밥), a stew (찌개, such as 된장찌개 or 김치찌개) or cold noodles (냉면) near the end.
  4. Side dishes (banchan / 반찬) and lettuce refills are normally free. Ask "더 주세요" (please give more).

Wrapping a ssam (쌈)

  1. Put a lettuce or perilla leaf in your palm.
  2. Add a piece of meat, a dab of ssamjang (쌈장, the thick chili-bean paste), grilled garlic and kimchi.
  3. Fold it up and eat it in one bite.

Grilling etiquette

  1. At many places the staff grill for you. Wait for them to say it is ready.
  2. If you grill, flip once, cut with the scissors, and move cooked pieces to the edge.
  3. Pour drinks for others before yourself, and let the eldest at the table start eating first.
  4. Ask for a new grill plate (불판 갈아주세요) when it blackens.

Solo diners and two-portion minimums

  1. Many grill houses ask for two portions, so a single diner pays for two.
  2. Some old shops refuse solo diners at peak hours. Go off-peak or ask "혼자 돼요?" (can I eat alone?).
  3. The alternatives are a lunch set (정식), a pork-belly stew or a rice bowl with a small grill portion.

Paying and tipping

  1. Pay at the front counter on your way out, unless staff bring a bill to the table.
  2. Cards are accepted at almost every restaurant here.
  3. Tipping is not expected. Do not leave cash on the table.

  4. Tap "예약" or "웨이팅" if the place takes bookings or queue tickets.
  5. Search "아현동 삼겹살" or "애오개 삼겹살" to see what is near you in Ahyeon / 아현동 or Aeogae / 애오개.

Quick checklist

  1. Check for a mid-afternoon break; many of these restaurants close 15:00–17:00.
  2. Look up the closed day. Jobakjip, for one, is closed on Sundays.
  3. Book where the map app shows a reservation button, especially on weekday evenings.
  4. Wear clothes you can wash. The smoke sticks.
