Gangnam is the commute answer. Crossing the river twice a day is the single most common reason people move house in Seoul, and if your office is on the south side, living there removes about ninety minutes from your week — and more from your patience.

It works particularly well if you:

• work in Gangnam, Samseong, Yeoksam or Seolleung. Most of those are a walk or a couple of stops.
• want your own door. These are studios: your own kitchen, your own bathroom, nobody else’s dishes. If you have done shared living and are finished with it, this is the option.
• are on a company transfer. The address is legible to Korean colleagues, the neighbourhood is quiet and well-served, and the 6009 bus makes airport runs simple.
• use the gym and the park more than the bar. Dosan Park, the Han River at Banpo and a dense concentration of gyms are all close.

Gangnam-gu Office Station (Line 7) is about seven minutes on foot, with Line 9 and the Bundang line nearby depending on direction. Gangnam Station itself — the Line 2 interchange — is a short ride or a long walk.

The 6009 airport bus stops three minutes away and runs direct to Incheon, which is the easiest airport connection of any of our addresses after Hongdae.

Gangnam is the most expensive neighbourhood we operate in per square metre, and the rooms here are studios rather than bedrooms, so the monthly figure is not directly comparable with a share-house room elsewhere on the site. The live prices above are for the whole unit.

The terms that make this unusual for Gangnam:

• Deposit is one month’s rent. A conventional studio lease in this district typically wants ten to a hundred million won of key money before you get the keys.
• No Korean guarantor and no ARC needed at signing, on an English contract.
• No agency fee.

That upfront difference is the entire reason this address exists on our list. The monthly rent is a Gangnam rent; the cash you need on day one is not a Gangnam number.

It is the priciest rent we list. That is not a hidden cost, it is the neighbourhood. If the commute is not the deciding factor for you, your money goes considerably further north of the river.

A studio is not a share house. No housemates means no built-in social circle. People who arrive in Korea knowing nobody often underestimate how much of their first six months came from living with other people — worth thinking about honestly before choosing privacy.

Street level is quiet at weekends. Gangnam empties out when the offices close. That is restful if you want restful and dull if you wanted a neighbourhood with a pulse on a Sunday.
