Who Gwanghwamun suits
Gwanghwamun is the central answer. This is the historic core of Seoul, and almost everything in the old city is walkable from it.
It works particularly well if you:
- work in the CBD. The Gwanghwamun and City Hall office districts are a walk, not a commute.
- want your own door in the middle of town. Private kitchen, private bathroom, palace walls on the way home.
- are here for a defined stretch. A season of work, a research posting, a project. It is an easy place to arrive into and leave from, with no setup overhead.
- like walking. Bukchon, Samcheong-dong, Insadong, Cheonggyecheon and Tongin Market are all within about fifteen minutes on foot.
Getting around from Gwanghwamun
Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3) is about seven minutes away, and the Gwanghwamun bus hub — one of the busiest interchanges in the city — is about eight, which puts most of Seoul within one bus.

What renting here actually costs
These are the highest-priced units we list, and like Gangnam they are studios rather than share-house rooms, so the monthly figure covers a whole self-contained flat rather than a bedroom.
The terms are what make it workable:
- Deposit is one month’s rent, against a conventional Jongno lease that would want key money in the tens of millions.
- No Korean guarantor and no ARC needed at signing, on an English contract.
- No agency fee.
If the central location is the draw but the price is not, the Haebangchon and Muak pages are the realistic comparison — both are under half an hour from here.
The catch
It is the top of our range. Nothing hidden about it; the old city centre is expensive. Set against a conventional lease the upfront cash is far lower, but the monthly rent is a central-Seoul rent.
Tourists. Gyeongbokgung is one of the most visited places in Korea, and weekends around the palace gates are busy, with the crowd, coaches and hanbok rental shops that come with that. The residential lanes behind are quiet; the approach is not.
A studio means no housemates. Same trade as Gangnam — privacy in exchange for the ready-made social circle a share house gives you. Worth being deliberate about rather than defaulting to it.
Very few units. Two studios, with fixed dates. Check what is actually open above before planning around it.
